CLIMATE QUALITY METEOROLOGICAL SYSTEMS FOR SHIPS

SAMOS (Shipboard Automated Meteorological and Oceanographic System) sets a standard for the accuracy meteorological measurements must have to be useful for input to climate models. Satellite ground truth, validation, and real-time correction require similar standards. RMR Co. uses the SAMOS standards as a guideline for its system of shipboard instrumentation.

The ZMET system shown here was developed for the ARM International Cloud Experiment in Darwin. Components shown, clockwise from the upper left. Note, a ship signal light at 2:00 is not part of the Zmet installation.

  • Aerovane wind monitor
  • Vaisala WXT weather transmitter,
  • Vaisala HMP45 T/RH sensor in a multiplate radiation shield
  • HMP45 in a special radiation shield (CSIRO)
  • HMP45 in an aspirated radiation shield
  • R.M. Young siphon rain gauge
Not shown but part of this system are
  • GPS receiver
  • pitch-roll-flux gate compass
